Sunset Over the Abandoned Bunker at Camposoto Beach, San Fernando, Cadiz Spain

A block of concrete lies tilted in the surf at Camposoto, heavy as a shipwreck and just as out of place. Behind it the sun drops into the Atlantic through a sky of torn cloud, lighting the edges of every wave and throwing a long gold path across the wet sand. The bunker was built to watch this horizon for an enemy. Now it watches the sunset, half sunk, with the tide going in and out through its broken walls.

Camposoto is the long, open beach of San Fernando, running south from the town toward Punta del Boquerón inside the Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park. It is one of the wildest stretches of sand left on the Cádiz coast, and it is known for its bunkers: concrete gun posts and shelters raised along this shore in the years around the Second World War, when the coast near the Strait of Gibraltar was fortified against a landing that never came. Decades of storms and shifting sand have undermined them, and several now lie tipped over at the waterline.

The composition leans on that tilt. The bunker fills the left of the frame at an angle that feels close to falling, while the sun sits low and small on the right, so the eye travels from the dark mass of concrete to the bright point of light and back again. Backlight turns the foam into gold lace, and the clouds, lit from below, carry the colour across the whole upper half of the picture.

That contrast is what makes it work as a print. It is a sunset, but it is also a picture about time: a structure built for a war, slowly handed back to the sea, and still standing guard over a view that has outlasted its purpose.
