Below, the plaza carries on as it has for centuries, small figures crossing beneath the same gate that has watched over this corner of the old city since the thirteenth century.

The Arc of the Rose is the former western gate of medieval Cadiz, built into the city walls in the thirteenth century under Alfonso X the Wise and now standing beside the cathedral in the Plaza Pio XII. Its name's origin is debated: some trace it to a nearby chapel devoted to a Marian image known as the Rose, others to an eighteenth-century captain named Gaspar de la Rosa who lived in the city.
