Memorial of the Centennial of the 1812 Constitution Cadiz Spain
At dusk, the Monument to the Cortes glows from its own floodlights while the sky behind it fades through soft blues and pinks. The full ensemble is visible here: the tall column marked "1812," the equestrian figure of Hercules, and the allegorical statues surrounding its base, all standing quietly in the gardens of Plaza de Espana as the palm trees darken into silhouette.

Also known as the Monument to the Cortes, the memorial was designed by architect Modesto Lopez Otero with sculpture by Aniceto Marinas (1866-1953) and erected in 1912. Its reliefs and allegorical figures depict War, Peace, Industry and Agriculture alongside scenes of Cadiz's resistance during the War of Independence, while a group of caryatids at the top support the constitutional code of 1812 itself, all set within the theatrical, courtly composition of the Plaza de Espana gardens.
