Boats at Sunset Beneath the 1812 Constitution Bridge, Cadiz Spain

Row after row of small boats sit shoulder to shoulder in their moorings, still enough to double themselves perfectly in the water below. Behind them, the towers of the 1812 Constitution Bridge rise into a sky that has gone almost entirely pink and violet, the whole bay lit by a sunset that leaves nothing looking ordinary.

The Bahia de Cadiz has sheltered small craft for centuries, and marinas like this one stay full for good reason: calm, current-free water and a near-constant sea breeze make the bay one of the most reliable stretches on the Andalusian coast for recreational sailing and fishing alike. The bridge crossing the water behind the boats needs no introduction locally. Opened in 2015 and nicknamed "La Pepa" after the Spanish Constitution of 1812, it carries traffic between Cadiz and Puerto Real on a main span of 540 metres, still the longest of any cable-stayed bridge in Spain. At this hour, though, it reads less like an engineering landmark and more like a backdrop, a dark silhouette holding up a sky that outshines it.
