Dramatic Sunset Over Campelo Beach, Ferrol Spain

Some beaches simplify at sunset; Campelo does the opposite. Dark rock ribs cut across the wet sand at low tide, storm clouds pile up over the Atlantic, and the last light comes through anyway, turning the water into a sheet of orange glass.

Campelo sits on the Ferrolterra coast, a short drive from Ferrol, the naval port city that has anchored Galicia's Atlantic fleet since the 18th century. The beach itself belongs to the rougher, rockier stretch of coastline typical of the Rias Altas, where slate and schist outcrops break the sand into tidal pools and channels rather than one smooth curve. It is quieter than the resort beaches further south, better known to local surfers and photographers than to tourists, and it earns that reputation on evenings like this one.
