Juan Sebastián Elcano — Cadiz Departure at Sunset (1992)

A whitecap breaks in the foreground and the Spanish training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano fills the right side of the frame under white canvas. To the left, a racing yacht flies a red-and-yellow Spanish-flag spinnaker. Between them the sun sits low on the horizon, a flare through cloud, while smaller boats and spectators hold the middle distance. This is the Cadiz departure of the 1992 Tall Ships / Grand Regatta Columbus - colour, wind, and a working parade of sail.

Look at the hierarchy of the frame. Closest is the sea itself: dark blue water, a cresting white wave, and spray that puts you low to the waterline. Mid-frame, the dark-sailed yacht cuts across the sunburst. Farther right, the four-masted schooner rides higher - white hull, stacked sails, people on deck - while a small boat nearby flies the Spanish flag. The sky does the rest: orange, pink, and gold cloud around a low sun, so every sail edge picks up warm light.

The Juan Sebastián de Elcano is the Spanish Navy's four-masted training schooner, named for the Basque navigator who completed the first circumnavigation after Magellan's death. In 1992 she was part of the Cadiz Tall Ships celebrations marking five centuries of Columbus's voyage. This photograph does not isolate her as a static portrait. It keeps the fleet, the racing canvas, and the chop of the bay in the same breath.

That mix is what the day looked like from the water: heritage sail and modern regatta traffic sharing one sunset, Cadiz falling away behind the lens. The colour print holds the national palette - Spanish red and yellow on the spinnaker, white canvas on the schooner, and a sky that refuses to go quiet.
