Lighthouse During Vibrant Sunset Cadiz Spain

The tide pulls back far enough to turn La Caleta beach into a mirror, and for a few minutes the sky refuses to be ignored. The lighthouse at the tip of Castillo de San Sebastian catches the last direct light of the day while its walls and lamplight settle into silhouette, the whole scene doubled in the wet sand and shallow tide pools below.

Built on what was once a tidal island and reached today by a stone causeway, Castillo de San Sebastian has stood guard over this stretch of Cadiz's Atlantic coast since the 18th century, its lighthouse marking the point where the bay opens onto open water. The castle is one of the city's most photographed landmarks; what makes an evening like this one different is the tide, low enough to lay bare the rock flats of La Caleta and let them hold the color a few minutes longer than the sky does.
