A lone photographer plants a tripod on the hilltop at Medina Sidonia and waits. Below him the whitewashed town spills down toward the plain, and behind him one of Andalusia's oldest hill towns turns its stone the color of the sky: first amber, then rose, then a deep violet that swallows the horizon whole.

Medina Sidonia is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Spain, its hilltop settled long before Rome and later home to the Dukes of Medina Sidonia, who financed the Spanish Armada. The ruined Alcazar and the Gothic Iglesia Mayor Santa Maria la Coronada still crown the town, and from that same high ground the view opens out over the Campina gaditana toward the Bay of Cadiz. It sits on the Ruta del Toro, and at sunset the whitewashed streets and the wide plain below both catch the same fading light, which is what drew the tripod out in the first place.
