Sunlit River Below Caaveiro Monastery, Galicia Spain

Deep in the Fragas do Eume, one of the best-preserved stretches of Atlantic forest in Europe, the Eume river cuts a shaded gorge that only breaks into full light in a few clearings. This is one of them: the water flashes gold beneath the canopy, and above the treeline the bell tower of an old monastery keeps watch as it has for a thousand years.

Caaveiro Monastery was founded in the 10th century, reputedly by an uncle of the hermit San Rosendo, and grew into one of the wealthiest religious houses in medieval Galicia before falling into ruin after the disentailment laws of the 19th century. Restoration work over recent decades has stabilised the Romanesque church and cloister, and the site is still reached on foot, over a footbridge across the Eume, deep inside the Fragas do Eume Natural Park, one of the largest surviving stretches of Atlantic coastal forest in Europe.
