Saint Sebastian Castle at Sunset: Waves Through the Reef at La Caleta, Cadiz
The sun sits on the Atlantic horizon at Cádiz, and the tide has pulled back far enough to show the reef. Water runs through channels in the dark rock, breaking white as it pours between the ledges. On the right, the stone wall of the Castle of San Sebastián rises from the shore, and its small sentry turret catches the last light. Clouds fan out across the sky in orange and violet. It is the end of the day on the western edge of one of the oldest cities in Western Europe. This first image is an interpretation; the photograph it grew from, taken at the same spot, appears further down.

Subject: Sunset over the rocky shore below the Castle of San Sebastián, with the tide running through the reef
Location: Castillo de San Sebastián, La Caleta, Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain
Medium: Colour photograph and an interpretation of the same frame
Series: Seascapes
The Castle of San Sebastián stands at the far end of La Caleta beach, on a small island separated from the old city. The fortress was built in 1706 as an irregular walled enclosure, guarding one flank of Cádiz against attack from the sea. Long before that, the island already had a history: in 1457 a Venetian crew recovering from the plague raised a chapel there, and classical tradition placed an ancient temple on the same rock. The castle was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, Spain's highest heritage protection.
What makes this spot so photogenic is the reef. At low tide the flat, dark rock around the island is exposed, and every wave that comes in has to find its way back out through narrow gaps. A slow shutter turns that movement into white veils of water, while the rock stays sharp. Facing west, the view lines up with the sunset for much of the year, so the light comes in low and warm across the wet stone, and the castle wall turns from grey to gold in a few minutes.
The photograph behind it
This is the frame as the camera recorded it. The sun has already dropped behind a thin layer of haze, so the sky is pale yellow rather than orange, and the light on the castle wall is soft and even. The water, the green weed on the ledges and the stone of the fortress are the same as above; what changes in the interpretation is the sky and the colour of the light.

The short video moves from the photograph to the interpretation so you can compare them. Watch it on @RelaxingTrails4K on YouTube.
See more of Cádiz in motion
This stretch of coast has been filmed many times for our travel channel. These time-lapses show the same castle and beach as the light changes:
- Sunset at the Castle of San Sebastián, Cádiz: time-lapse (2 min)
- San Sebastián Castle and its lighthouse at dusk (2 min)
- La Caleta at dusk, between the two castles (1 min)
- Cádiz in motion: a 4K time-lapse of the city (3 min)
For the same fortress in other light, see a dramatic sunset over the Castle of San Sebastián and the moon rising over the castle from La Caleta. On the other side of the old town, the cathedral dominates the sea front in dramatic skies over the Campo del Sur.
Both versions of this frame are available as museum-quality prints, canvas or posters, and the interpretation can also be licensed for your own project.
