Galicia in Photographs: the Rías, Village by Village
Most of our photographs were taken on the Atlantic coast of Galicia, in the north-west corner of Spain: the deep inlets called rías, their fishing villages, bridges, beaches and storms. Here they all are, grouped by place, together with old postcards of the same towns brought back to colour. The vintage travel posters we have made from these views have their own page.
Ferrol and its ría
The naval city at the mouth of the Ría de Ferrol, its shipyards and beaches, and the villages around the water: Fene, Mugardos and Neda. Several of these views are old postcards, shown with our colour interpretation.
Pontedeume, Ares and the Eume
Pontedeume and its medieval bridge, the fishing villages of the Ría de Ares, and the forest of the Fragas do Eume upriver, where the monastery of Caaveiro stands above the water.
The Rías Baixas and Santiago
South to the Ría de Pontevedra, where the granite hórreos of Combarro stand on the shore, and inland to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela at the end of the Way of St James.
Where to stay on the Rías Altas
Ferrol, Fene, Mugardos, Pontedeume and Ares lie around neighbouring rías that open onto the same bay, so a single base puts most of these views within a short drive. The map shows places to stay around Pontedeume and the Ría de Ares.
